Search engine optimization (SEO) is a great way to propel your online business or even to set up an online business. Google is the main search engine to care about. In order to get started you definitely want some analytics, Google Analytics is the best value for money (it's free), if you need more privacy for your visitors you should probably keep stuff in your own hands by using the open source software called piwik.
Keyword Analysis
The site needs to be focused around a specific subject. The more focused the site and the more targeted the keyword terms can be, the better chance the site has of achieving top placement in search engines.
Internal structure
The internal structure of the site needs to be set up right, e.g. use h1, h2 and h3 tags, proper title tags, and so on.
URLs
Use canonical URLs. In other words, the URL should consist of actual words, such as http://www.example.com/search_engine_optimization.html, not things like http://www.example.com/index.php?section=2&page=3&id=5
Link building
Try to have as many incoming links as possible, from quality sites. While there are many strategies to link building, quality links have a much bigger impact than large quantities of links. Google is VERY interested when it comes to incoming links.
